An intensive wind tunnel session of upwind sail sets has been conducted at the Yacht Research Unit Kiel’s Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel. Results are available as JSON-files for the following rig dimensions:
- Masthead Rig, Genoa 100%, Square Top Mainsail (Y_J0101_73_100_SQH_V1.json)
- Fractional Rig 15/16, Geona 100%, Square Top Mainsail (Y_1516_73_100_SQH.json)
- Fractional Rig 15/16, Geona 100%, Conventional Top Mainsail (Y_1516_73_100_STR.json)
- Fractional Rig 15/16, Geona 135%, Square Top Mainsail (Y_J1516_73_100_SQH.json)
- Fractional Rig 15/16, Geona 135%, Conventional Top Mainsail (Y_1516_73_100_STR.json)
- Fractional Rig 7/8, Geona 100%, Conventional Top Mainsail (Y_0708_73_100_STR.json)
- Fractional Rig 7/8, Geona 100%, Square Top Mainsail (Y_0708_73_100_SQH.json)
Note that these are aerodynamic coefficients for the entire rig and sail set including windage elements (hull, …). Aerodynamic coefficients are given in six degrees of freedom in a drag/lift/span (DLS) coordinate system: “D”-coordinate axis is axis in wind direction, “L”-axis is perpendicular to “D”-axis and “S”-axis. The “S”-axis points perpendicular to the water surface when the yacht is in upright condition. “L” and “S” rotate together with heel-motion of the yacht.
The sail area for normalization is build with the rig dimension: A_ref = (P*E+I*J)/2.
